Ways to Help Children Prepare for the First Day of School

June 1, 2021 by Carter Leave a Comment

The first day of school will always be a stressful day for parents. It’s the first time for most children to be away for a long time. Hence, there are tears once they realise they have to stay at school for hours. They might even have tantrums. There are a few ways to prevent it from happening and ensure that they feel prepared for the first day. Here are some of them.

Mind conditioning works

Constantly remind your children about going to school soon. Explain what happens at school and why it’s fun to be there. Watch videos of other children having fun while learning. Make it clear that they will be there on their own. Encourage them to try and see where it goes. Create an atmosphere of excitement so your children will feel good about it. Once the time arrives, it’s not a problem anymore.

Play at home

You can set up play areas at home. If you can invite relatives and friends to come over and play, it helps. It makes your children feel prepared for the idea of playing with others. Some of them might feel awkward, and they will have a hard time interacting. Preparing them at home will help. You can also invest in soft play at home. It provides a chance to play and have fun. Once your children go to school and play with other toddlers, they will feel comfortable with it.

Share your experiences

You were also a child once, and you experienced problems during the first day of school. Be open about it to your children. Let them know that it’s natural to feel afraid or have second thoughts. You went through the same experience. By speaking the truth about it, you will encourage your children to face the challenge. It’s not easy to be away from family for several hours, but they can do it. Talk about how happy you were when you had the chance to go to school.

Introduce your children to their teachers

Weeks before the start of class, you will already know who the teachers will be. Ask the school if your children can talk to the teachers through a virtual call. Establish a connection and make your children feel comfortable with another parental figure at school. You can have a few calls before the first day to create a sense of trust.

Create a reward system

Rewarding your children for being brave is a good idea. It’s a good motivation strategy. However, it can’t be a long-term option. You want to do it on the first day, but not make it a norm. Consider using a fair system so you won’t spoil your children.

Hopefully, these preparations are good enough to help your children survive the first day. You don’t want to encounter lots of tears on that day. If you fail on day one, give it another go the next day. Eventually, your children will feel comfortable about going to school.
