How to clean your washing machine

February 22, 2021 by Carter Leave a Comment

Your laundry is only as clean as your washing machine. Proper washing machine maintenance and repair is essential to get the most out of your appliance.

If your washing machine has a strange smell or is starting to get little black spots on the inside, it’s time for a maintenance wash. Give your machine some TLC by following these steps.

Maintenance washing

It would be best if you gave your machine a maintenance wash once a month. This will eliminate any detergent build-up and help your washing machine to operate optimally. Empty your machine and employ the highest temperature cotton wash. Voila, your machine is clean!

Different checks

If you live in a hard water area, like in city centres, you need to descale your washing machine every six months. Follow the instruction on your descaling product’s packet to avoid any problems.

You should also clean your pump filter. The filter protects the pump from any obstructions and can be found on the bottom of your machine. Remove the small cover to access, lay a few towels down in case any water leaks, and unscrew the filter. If there isn’t an obvious filter, remove the kick strip at the front of the machine and see if the filter is hidden. You should clean your filter every 4 to 6 weeks to avoid bad performance.

You need to check your drain filters and remove any hair, debris, lint and fluff. Clean the door of your machine regularly as dust is a significant fire hazard. Consider leaving the door open between cycles to stop mould from growing.

The detergent drawer can get slimy and disgusting. Lower washing temperatures and non-biological detergent can facilitate a build up a soap over time. Frequently wipe down your detergent drawers with a damp cloth or kitchen paper. If detergent is starting to stick, remove the drawer and soak it in hot water.

Inspect the hoses of your machine for kinks and signs of wear. Most manufacturers advise changing your machine hoses every five years to wear on the side of caution.

You need to monitor the valves on your washing machine. Valves are used on various appliances, including boilers, gas systems, furnaces and vacuum systems. Dishwashers and washing machines depend on valves for controlling the water flow direction. Save yourself time, money and energy by regularly checking the valves to ensure they are working correctly.

Filters, valves and hoses may need replacing or repairing after a few years of wear and tear. However, for the most part, washing machines are designed to last for a long time with proper maintenance and care. Spend a small amount of time each month cleaning your detergent drawer, filter and drum of your machine to avoid any major costs down the line. You will thank yourself later!
