How to Draw the Eye Around the Room

December 18, 2020 by Carter Leave a Comment

One of the greatest tricks in interior design is to draw the eye around the room so it rests on certain points. If you are able to do so, you are going to create a space that feels warm and welcoming to all that come to it. Here are some of the ways you can draw the eye around your rooms, no matter what the function of the room might be.

Pillows, Bed, Bedding, Bedroom, White, Sleep, Home

Statement Pieces

The easiest way to draw the eye by far is through the use of statement pieces. If you have a wash of the same colour and then one big item that is in a different colour or pattern, your eye is obviously going to go straight to it rather than linger elsewhere.

There are many options that you can choose from when trying to pick a statement piece. Some people like to go for a work of art, as that is something that can easily become a talking point within your home. Something like a statement lampshade might also prove to be just the thing if you want something more unusual. You could also use a piece of furniture like a sofa or even your bed.

Play with Colour

Another easy way to draw the eye is through the use of colour. If you have one bold colour amongst another, your eyes are going to very naturally be drawn right there. You can use this with colour-blocking, but there are also several other techniques that you can try.

For example, if you have a narrow room that you want to draw the eye down, place a rug on the floor with thin stripes heading in the direction you wish to go. This will naturally want to draw someone further in. It is a great technique to use in a narrow hallway or a galley kitchen.

Use Lighting

There are several types of tasks that lights can perform. Using spotlights means that you will be able to highlight a certain area that you want to bring to attention. This could be useful when coupled with a statement piece, as mentioned above.

We are naturally drawn to light, and our eyes will focus on whatever the light highlights. Playing with colour to create shadows and pools of light could be an amazing option here to help trick the eye and make it rest on certain areas around the room.

Drawing the eye around the room is going to be something that takes time for you to develop. Don’t be afraid to play around with different interior set-ups until you find something that you like. This is a key skill in interior design, and it is one that you are going to have to develop on your own. However, when you are able to create the space that you want within your own personal design aesthetics, you can then begin to apply this across other mediums too.
